Virgin Takes On Vodafone with 7.2 Mbps Mobile Broadband
Virgin has become the second service provider in the UK to upgrade its mobile broadband speeds to 7.2 Mbps. The development, announced recently, takes Virgin ahead of its competitors O2, 3 and Orange and puts it in head-to-head competition with Vodafone, which is the only player to offer 7.2 Mbps connectivity in the UK till now. Subscribers to Virgin can avail of the new speeds with the use of the new 7.2 Mb dongle, offered by Virgin on a monthly rollover or an 18-month plan, with 1 or 3 GB download limits. With the new dongle, the company believes subscribers can access not only iPlayer but also YouTube to view their favourite shows, events and video clips. However, the actual speeds available on the connection will depend on a myriad number of factors such as network density, congestion and distance from the nearest tower or hub. Therefore, not every user will experience a super fast connection. Still the development represents a leap forward for Virgin Media, and the company is particularly excited about the new speed. Graeme Oxby, executive director of mobile for Virgin UK, said in this regard that apart from a wire-line connection in the home or office, this would be the fastest net connection speed one can experience. On the move, it will be the fastest and best way to connect to the internet. Oxby added that the company is happy to provide this easier way to subscribers to experience the power of internet.
