A Rant in Regards to Sydney Botulinum Injections

Sydney Botulinum therapy (BoTox for short) is rapidly becoming the latest trend in Sydney society in fact it is becoming an important part of any beauty routine for a lot of people in the city. Still I am often stunned by the misguided tales about this treatment.

Here I have listed a selection of the common mistakes which I encounter frequently in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a physician.

Mistaken Belief # 1: BoTox might immobilize the muscles in my face!

Under the skin of the face are around 60 muscles. The extended use of these muscles over time may cause fine lines or wrinkles. The overuse of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the muscles of the face becoming too relaxed. The dosage injected by virtually all doctors are calculated to make you look ‘refreshed’, yet your face will remain just as animated.

By employing a carefully calculated dosage of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right muscles you can get a softening of the fine lines and wrinkles without reducing facial expression.

Mistaken Belief # 2: Botulinum is toxic!
There is a grain of truth in this argument. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In very large quantities it may loosen muscles that you do not want loosened or may even cause illness.

However to help you see the bigger picture – an old pharmacy expression states that ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. A large dosage of any medicinal drug can result in sickness. Water can be fatal if you drink too much.

Mistaken Belief # 3: It will sting!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician uses hypodermic needles finer than a human hair. Many patients have stated that the shots aren’t worse than getting bitten by mosquitoes. It certainly is less traumatic than something like a blood test.

Mistaken Belief # 4: My face will lose feeling!
False. BoTox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. BoTox just impacts on the relaxation of muscular tissues.

Mistaken Belief # 5. You must keep getting BoTox otherwise you will develop worse fine lines and wrinkles than ever!
This is also false.

The first treatment lasts about three months. Later treatments do last a few weeks more. Gradually as muscle strength returns the wrinkles will reappear bit by bit. Nevertheless your lines won’t be worse than when you commenced your treatment.

Even if you never have BoTox ever again – any wrinkles should be less pronounced than if you had never been treated. This, of course is mainly so because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
