Graduation Tam
For the graduating doctoral candidate, in addition to the basic regalia, the graduation tam is of utmost importance. As the doctoral candidate is getting the graduation gown and cap, they also have to make sure they get a graduation tam. The graduation tam serves to differentiate the doctoral candidate from ordinary students and other candidates who have not yet gotten their doctoral degrees. The tams which are often custom fitted and made of black velveteen, are very similar to berets. A doctoral candidate may either choose the graduation tam that has either six or eight corners. Most professors opt for the six sided tassel. Again, the tams have either Gold Bullion (metallic) or Gold Rayon tassels.
